The APEC Second Meeting on the Policy Partnership on Women and the Economy (PPWE2) commenced this morning and is the first of a week long program of high level dialogues focusing on empowering women and the economy within the APEC region.
Chairman of the PPWE2 meeting, Fredrick Tamarua, in his welcome remark reminded delegates about the importance of the PPWE discussions and its goals to advance the economic integration of women in the APEC region for the benefit of all members and to coordinate gender activities across other APEC working groups.
“I would like to stress and reiterate on the importance of the work that we do on the PPWE, as we all know gender and women’s economic empowerment is a cross cutting issue,” he said.
Mr Tamarua said Chile as the next host of APEC in 2019, has plans on pursuing the discussions, which PPWE has embarked on in the 2015-2018 strategic plan.
He added that PNG as the host of this year’s APEC Summit with the theme ‘Harnessing Inclusive Opportunities and Embracing the Digital Future,’ is pushing for inclusivity for women in the digital economy by embracing technology to their advantage.
PNG will also give an update on the discussions that include Gender Smart Workplaces, Building and Promoting Workplace Health, Safety and Inclusivity to Enhance Women’s Economic Participation and Productivity.
