NEC ENDORSES SETTING UP OF NATIONAL TASKFORCE TO DEVELOP A LONG TERM STRATEGY FOR THE KOKODA AND BROWN RIVER AREA
[FOR RELEASE – Wednesday, 19 March 2008]
The National Executive Council has endorsed the setting up of a national taskforce to develop a long term strategy for the Kokoda Track and the Brown River catchment area.
The taskforce will be chaired by the Secretary for Environment and Conservation, and will also include the key departments of National Planning & Monitoring, Treasury, Finance, Provincial & LLG, and Lands & Physical Planning, as well as agencies like PNG Power, Eda Ranu, Tourism Promotion Authority, and National Cultural Commission. Other agencies will be co-opted when required.
Acting Prime Minister, Dr Puka Temu said the taskforce will look into issues like the renewal of the exploration license of Frontier Resources Mining Exploration lease; the National Capital District’s (NCD) future water and power supply needs; tourism potential of Kokoda and surrounding areas; carbon trading potential, as well as the option of a World Heritage Listing of the Track.
“The taskforce will also develop a strategy to address landowner issues, including short, medium and long term development and employment options,” Dr Temu said.
He said the taskforce is expected to report back to Cabinet within two months on its institutional arrangements, staffing and funding in which to develop and implement its master plan.
