LATE MANNING WAS PASSIONATE ABOUT PNG: PM

Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare said today that the late Michael Manning was “passionate about Papua New Guinea.”

“I had known Mr Manning for a long time. He was passionate about PNG and committed himself to tasks that sought to improve the lives of ordinary Papua New Guineans,” Sir Michael wrote in a condolence letter to widow, Mrs. Relly Manning.

He said the late Mr Manning‘s contributions to the development of PNG could not be underestimated.

“His work with Transparency International was well known.

“While I have not always agreed with his views on issues, I respect his courage to speak his mind without fear or favour,” Sir Michael said.

The Prime Minister said “Papua New Guinea had lost a son.

Sir Michael was in Niue when he learnt of the passing of the late Mr Manning.

“On behalf of the government and people of PNG, and my family, I extend our sincere condolences.

“Our prayers and thoughts are with the family during this time of grief,” he said.
