[FOR RELEASE – 17 March 2008]

Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Lands and Mining, Dr Puka Temu today announced NEC’s appointment of Joel Luma as the Secretary for the Department of Works.

Dr Temu said the appointment will ensure the Works department moved forward in implementing its plans and policies and other important national and provincial agenda that would support the Government’s priority programs.

He said Mr Luma has extensive knowledge of the Works department, including being responsible for the overall coordination of project implementation of both capital works and maintenance in all 19 provinces, as well as formulating the implementation guidelines of the District Roads and Bridges program.

Dr Temu said Mr Luma had been acting Secretary since August 2007.

Mr Luma, 52, holds a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from the PNG University of Technology and a Master of Science in Construction Management from Sheffield Hallam University, United Kingdom.
