NEC GOES TO THE PROVINCES TO MEET WITH PEC AND THE PEOPLE: PM

[For Release – Sunday 29 June 2008]

Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare and Chairman of the National Executive Council (NEC) reiterated today that he takes Cabinet to the provinces regularly so the Ministers can consult with the people as well as the Provincial Executive Councils (PECs).

“It gives us the opportunity to make contact with the ordinary people who otherwise would not meet the NEC at all.

“It also gives NEC a better appreciation of the level of progress or development in the provinces - the consultation between the NEC and the respective PEC is very important for obvious budget and policy reasons,” Sir Michael said.

The Prime Minister said “to deviate from the above intentions will defeat the primary reason of taking the NEC down to the people.”

Sir Michael’s comments follow media reports by the Deputy EHP Governor to claim ‘rent’ from the national government for the staging of a NEC meeting in there in 2006.

Sir Michael said that NEC did not give K140m to the Manus Provincial Government for the recent Cabinet meeting there.

“It was a proposal discussed at the joint Manus PEC and NEC meeting, which the NEC has not made any decision on yet.

“In fact, I have asked the Manus PEC to formally write to Cabinet on the K140m proposal. The NEC is yet to receive the proposals,” he said.

He said on the earlier East Sepik meeting, funding for identified projects in both provinces were agreed on after NEC deliberated on them.
