PM Considers Extension Of COI

[FOR RELEASE – 24 JUNE 2009]

Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare said he carefully considered the issues before endorsing the extension of the Finance Commission of Inquiry by another month.

Sir Michael said he fully appreciated the administrative and legal frustrations which have impacted on the orderly function and deliberations of the Commission since it was established.

“I have fully considered these issues and decided to give the Commission until 31st July to submit its final report,” Sir Michael said.

He said this will enable the Commission to be more focussed on the cases that the State stands a real chance of successfully prosecuting, as well as for recovery proceedings.

He said the Commission’s interim report also identified and recommended possible amendment of legislation in order to deal with issues of out-of-court settlements that are still occurring and will occur in future.

“We must appreciate that while they are costly, we must also understand the preventive and corrective measures that result from these inquiries will put the country in better stead in future,” Sir Michael said.
