PM PLEASED WITH PHILIPPINES VISIT
FOR RELEASE – 01 APRIL 2009Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare returned this morning from his four-day official visit to the Republic of the Philippines.
“I think it went very well and I’m very impressed with the response and reception we got from the Philippines government and people,” Sir Michael said.
He also had bilateral discussion with President Arroyo before the President hosted an official dinner in Sir Michael’s honour.
President Arroyo thanked Papua New Guinea for the support we’ve given them globally, including appointment of their nationals to various international organisations.
“I reiterated both countries’ commitment which we made to each other at our independence that we would support each other,” he said.
The Prime Minister said he was also particularly impressed with the business communities of both countries.
He said the chambers of commerce of both countries had established some useful links during the visit, which also culminated in the signing of a business cooperation agreement between the two groups. He also spoke at two business gatherings.
Sir Michael said Philippines investment in PNG was quite substantial, particularly through the Kenmore Group of Companies, Frabelle and RD Tuna.
“I also presented Order of Logohu awards on behalf of the Governor-General to the bosses of these three companies as they continue to invest substantially, provide employment for our people and get involved in a lot of social and charitable work in PNG,” he said.
Sir Michael said the hospitality of the host government and people was excellent, and he hoped his visit would be the catalyst to take the bilateral relations between both countries to a higher level.
