PM REGRETS LATEST POLITICAL DEVELOMENTS IN FIJI
FOR RELEASE – MONDAY 13 APRIL 2009Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare today expressed regret at the latest political developments in Fiji over the long Easter weekend.
Sir Michael said on the balance of what President Ratu Josefa Iloilo did, including the abrogation of the Fiji Constitution, there was no guarantee that Fiji was any closer to holding democratic elections as soon as possible.
These developments don’t necessarily mean the ordinary Fijian people can look forward to participating in such elections any time soon.
“I am particularly concerned that the donor community will now see this as the trigger to suspend or terminate their assistance to the Fijian people. These donors have stayed with the Fiji despite the coup in 2006,”Sir Michael said.
He said if these donors suspended or withdrew their assistance, it would not augur well for Fiji’s economy or the ordinary people.
“PNG has maintained that we will assist Fiji wherever we can, and this hasn’t changed much”.
“But the current Fijian leadership must also realise that they are the ones who can expedite moves towards holding fair elections soon,” Sir Michael said.
