PM SENDS CONDOLENCES TO SIR ARNOLD AND FAMILY

[FOR RELEASE – 03 March 2009]

Prime Minister, Sir Michael Somare has written to Governor of Madang, Sir Arnold Amet, expressing the government’s condolences on the passing of Lady Miaru.

“On behalf of the Government and our people, I express our sincere condolences to you, the children (Arnold Junior, Miriam, Serah, Sova, Giok and Keith), your grand children, the entire extended family and relatives in both Gulf and Madang provinces.”

“Please also accept the deep sympathies of Lady Veronica and my family for the tragedy that has befallen your family,” Sir Michael said.

He said the untimely passing of Lady Miaru, who was Sir Arnold’s soul mate of over 38 years, was a loss to all in Papua New Guinea.

“Those of us that have had the fortune of knowing Lady Miaru, we will remember her for her quiet demeanour but strong Christian character.”

“On this sad occasion, we wish to recognize and express gratitude for Lady Miaru’s selfless contribution, behind the scenes, towards the exemplary discharge of your own responsibilities as lawyer, Chief Justice of Papua New Guinea and, more recently, Governor of Madang,” Sir Michael wrote.

Sir Michael had already visited the ‘haus krai’ and was also expected to attend the funeral service at the Sioni Kami United Church this Thursday.
